Soulbrotha – “The Return Of Boom Bap” pt. 9

“Micfight” feat. Mykill Miers
The Hitchcock of Hip Hop! Usually Mykill is a beast on the mic! But to me he could went harder on this one. It was a bit tough to get the whole files from his recording-session. He had sent me mp3-versions of the verses first. When I asked for AIFF- or WAV-files he had send me some “criss-cross-styled” files.
It was like a big mess. I didn´t know which files were the main raps, chorus, back ups, etc. Man it was a pain, haha. And to make things worse I deleted the third verse, because it was very lame in my opinion. And I had edited the chorus as well, because there was some kind of clipping and crackling in the first line. Maybe you know I like it when the sound crackles haha, but not in the vocals my mans! However, at the end only two verses made it into the song. It was really a hard working process but in the long run that joint became big to me.
I really like how the chorus and the scratches came up together. The whole track reminds me a lot on the tracks that Mykill did with M-Boogie for his first album “It´s Been A Long Time Coming” back in 2000. That LP was a monster! Especially “Wanna Be An MC” with Freddie Foxxx killed it! Ah man, that beat is so minimalistic but brilliant and the raps are off the hook!
B-Base and me always play that song at DJ Gigs. It´s insane! I got 5 or 6 copies of that 12″ in my crates! But unfortunately his sound changed during the last years (as with so many artist) and I´m not really feeling his current tracks. He should jump back to the sound of his first album and get M-Boogie back on the boards! Or he should do an album with Soulbrotha, hehe.
By the way: What is M-Boogie doing now? Haven´t heard from him since his last release in 2002. Man this guy is dope! I collected every record from him on his label Ill Boogie Records and Blackberry Records.
So I highly recommend you guys to hit your local store or to dig on Discogs, Music Stack, Ebay or wherever your digital digging needs are satisfied for a copy of his brilliant works and of course for Mykill Miers´ stuff which is really really really Gangsta! Pow Pow Poooow!
Your’s truly, DJ 12 Finger Dan
