In our „Artist Feature“ series we regularly introduce well-known stars, underground big shots and newcomers. Each issue contains 15 questions, some of which are always the same, and some of which are individual.
Today: Small Professor. The Philly based Beatsmith may be one of the most impressive producers not known to most. His debut album Gigantic Vol. 1, was dropped in early 2012 and earned a lot of positive feedback. It’s one of those LPs that features the production of one, but the mic skills of many (including features from Guilty Simpson, Reef the Lost Cauze, Has-Lo and others).
During the past few months, Small Professor returned with remarkable projects like Cool Story, Pro and Cool Haiku, Pro. His latest joint is a remix EP, named after the highest rank awarded to Sumo Wrestlers, Yokozuna. Now Small Professor took some time to talk with us about his favourite restaurants in Philly, experiences he did while working with artists like Guilty Simpson, Reef The Lost Cauze and many others. Read on the „Artist Feature“ below.

Where to go to eat when in Philly? Do you have a special place?
The standard native Philadelphia answer for tourists looking for food is Pat’s where you can find cheesesteaks, but there’s Tony Lukes and Jim’s Steaks, also. As for me, I had this one spot in South Philly that had the illest cheesesteaks but the name escapes me. I’m on the hunt for them again now though thank to this questionnaire.
Your favorite dish?
My favorite dish is Macaroni & Cheese.
Who is your youth idol?
Which book did you read last?
„50 Reasons People Give For Believing In God“, by Guy P. Harrision.
Name three Songs which still impress you, each time hearing them.
„Fiber Optics“ by Has-Lo
„Stray Bullet“ by Organized Konfusion
„ICU“ by Blueprint feat. Vast Aire & Plead The 5th
Where have you been and what did you do on New Year’s Eve (2011)?
I haven’t traveled as much as I would have liked to at this point in my life, but I’ve been to a few places in the south and I visited Canada once. 2011 New Year’s Eve I hung out at my homeboy Sam’s house before he moved to Chicago.
Can you share an interesting anecdote about your time working with outstanding artists like Guilty Simpson, Reef The Lost Cauze and Has-Lo?
The common thread between those three artists is that despite having heard mostly everything they’ve recorded, they continue to suprise and impress me to this day.
The Hip-Hop scene in Philadelphia is, …
Alive and well, but unrecognized by the city until we get props and recognition elsewhere.
Sixers, Phillies or Eagles?
Sixers… Who are the Eagles?
Your favourite music shop in town, to your opinion?
Repo Records, on South Street. It’s what a record store should look and feel like.
Max B or Rick Ross?
Rick Ross!
Takamiyama Daigoro or Akebono Taro?
Akebono. The student will become the teacher. Great question.
„Band of Brothers“ or „The Pacific“?
Never saw either, so I will roll with „The Wire“.
An audio drama about my life should be narrated by …
Morgan Freeman.
Where I come from, the most important thing is …
Hard work and perserverance eventually pays off.
